ReplyDeleteFirst off, I'm going to go ahead and claim to be the inspiration for this post. And I could nominate as honorary members U2's "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and Tiffany's "I Think We're Alone Now." They may not have Run in their titles, but I they certainly embody the sentiment/action.
ReplyDeleteIn that case, "Brand New Colony" by The Postal Service gets a nod.
ReplyDeleteRun is a boring word. It calls to mind a single syllable shrug (I vigorously deny any redundancy):
ReplyDelete-"How was your day?"
-"run?"
(That's right. It's not even a capitalized shrug.)
It is not my intention to simply dwell on the flaws of this overused word. Instead, I will suggest an alternative. Granted, perambulate is not actually a synonym of run. To perambulate does not mean to move at a fast pace or, for that matter, any of the other various meanings of the word run. I for one have never heard of a perambulating nose. However, as a substitute for run, perambulate largely makes up in style what it lacks in coherence.
Perambulate Rabbit Perambulate!
Sincerely,
Obnoxious Git
I believe that Obnoxious Git's complaint is best summed up as follows: run is too pedestrian a word. Unfortunately, the same can be said of perambulate. Thus slither might be a more appropriate substitute.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Similarly, slithering suggests a suitable solution to the animal cruelty issues involved in ice jousting (with or without fireworks): simply substitute serpents for the horses.
Arnold and Obnoxious:
ReplyDeleteI believe you have far too much time on your hands. Although, perhaps not as much as I do, given the current entry.
